McCabe Greer Professor of the American Civil War Era Christina Snyder is featured in the latest issue of Research Penn State magazine. Dr. Snyder was interviewed about her award-winning book, Great Crossings: Indians, Settlers, and Slaves in the Age of Jackson. The book recounts the unique story of the Choctaw Academy in Great Crossings, Kentucky. The antebellum school was founded as a multi-ethnic community and an experiment in building a more inclusive community and nation. The story of Choctaw Academy is a microcosm of the disparate visions of the nation’s future that were hotly contested in the antebellum era.
