Zoom Book Talk with Nicole Myers Turner

Former Richards Center postdoctoral fellow Dr. Nicole Myers Turner will participate in a free Zoom webinar with the editors of The Journal of the Civil War Era to discuss her new book, Soul Liberty: The Evolution of Black Religious Politics in Postemancipation Virginia (UNC Press, 2020). The webinar talk will take place Thursday, July 23 at 4:00 pm Eastern Time. Registration is required (see the registration instructions below).

In Soul Liberty, Turner examines the African American Protestantism and American politics at the end of the Civil War and “challenges the idea of black churches as having always been politically engaged. Using local archives, church and convention minutes, and innovative Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, Turner reveals how freedpeople in Virginia adapted strategies for pursuing the freedom of their souls to worship as they saw fit—and to participate in society completely in the evolving landscape of emancipation” (UNC Press).

Dr. Turner is an assistant professor of Religious Studies at Yale University. She was the Richards Center’s postdoctoral fellow in African American History in 2015-2016. She is currently completing work on a complementary digital history project, Mapping Black Religion, which invites engagement with Black digital humanities’ critiques of mapping and with interpreting the relationship between the Black religious community and electoral political participation.
