John C. Winters, Ph.D. is Assistant Director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center and Visiting Assistant Professor of History at the Pennsylvania State University. He studies Indigenous and museum history and is author of “The Amazing Iroquois” and the Invention of the Empire State (Oxford University Press, 2023). John is also a public historian who directed the public history program at the University of Southern Mississippi, worked on projects with state institutions and museums in Mississippi, and served for seven years as public historian at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College and George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
